Questions about PigeonDM
PigeonDM sends a DM to each person who comments a word you choose on your Instagram posts and Reels, with the links or codes attached to that post. The answers below cover setup, limits, your data, and how it compares with the tools people weigh it against.
Getting started
- What is PigeonDM?
PigeonDM sends a direct message to each person who comments a word you choose on your Instagram posts and Reels. The DM carries the links or codes you attached to that post, and a public reply goes under the comment. It does that one job, with no chatbot to build and no broadcast to schedule.
- What is comment-to-DM on Instagram?
Comment-to-DM is an automation that sends a direct message to each person who comments a chosen word under an Instagram post, usually with a link or a promo code. It gets the link to people inside Instagram, where a caption can’t hold a clickable one. PigeonDM is a tool that does exactly this, through Instagram’s official API.
- How do I send a link to everyone who comments on my Instagram post?
Pick a word for people to comment, such as LINK, say it in the caption, and let a comment-to-DM tool answer. With PigeonDM, you attach the link to the post, and each comment containing that word gets a DM with it plus a public reply under the comment, with no cap on DMs. A comment without the word gets nothing, which keeps the DM for the people who asked.
- How do I set up PigeonDM?
Connect your Instagram account through Instagram’s own login, open a post, choose the word people should comment, paste what the DM should send (links, or plain text such as a promo code) and turn the post on. From then on, each person who comments that word gets the DM.
- What kind of Instagram account do I need?
A Business or Creator account, which Instagram calls a professional account. Instagram only opens messaging to apps for those accounts, so a personal account can’t be connected. Switching a personal account to Creator is free, in Instagram’s settings.
- Do I need a Facebook Page?
No. PigeonDM uses the version of Meta’s API that works through Instagram’s own login, and Meta states it does not require a Facebook Page linked to the account. You never type your Instagram password on PigeonDM; Instagram asks for it on its own page.
- Does it work with Reels, carousels, stories and lives?
PigeonDM answers comments on posts, Reels and carousels alike. Replies to your stories reach you as DMs, so the DM auto-reply on the Pro plan covers them. Comments on a live video are not answered.
- Does the trigger word have to be typed exactly?
No. PigeonDM matches the whole word whatever the capitals, accents or repeated letters, so “LINK”, “link!” and “Liiink” all count, while “linked” does not. Any language works, including Chinese, Japanese or Thai, which are written without spaces, and an emoji can be a trigger word too. The dashboard is in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
How it answers
- Will someone get the DM twice if they comment again?
No. PigeonDM sends one DM per person on each post, and the database enforces it, so two comments landing in the same second still produce one DM. The same person commenting on another of your posts gets that post’s DM.
- What about people who commented before I set it up?
Once one of your posts is on, PigeonDM logs every comment on your account, including the ones it could not answer yet. When their post is ready, one click sends those people their DM, up to 7 days after they commented, which is as far back as Instagram accepts a private reply.
- Does PigeonDM reply publicly under the comment?
Yes, on both plans. You write a few versions of the reply and each comment gets one of them at random, so the thread doesn’t repeat the same sentence. On the free plan the reply ends with a short PigeonDM mention.
- Can one DM send several links or a promo code?
Yes. Each post has its own list, one item per line, links or plain text such as a discount code, and everything goes out in a single DM. Instagram caps a DM at 1,000 characters, the signature included on the free plan.
- Can I see how many people clicked my links?
On the Pro plan, yes. Each link in a DM goes through a short redirect that counts the opens, so you see the clicks each post earns, and you can group them by brand to send a partner a CSV. If an affiliate network refuses redirected links, Pro can send the original link on that post, without click tracking.
- Why didn’t someone receive my auto-DM?
Usually for one of these reasons, and PigeonDM’s log says which: the comment didn’t contain the word, or its post wasn’t on; that person already got the DM for this post; the comment was deleted before the reply; Instagram refused the reply for that comment without giving a reason; or another auto-DM tool on the account answered first, since Instagram allows one private reply per comment. The log keeps each comment and what happened to it for 60 days.
Safety and your data
- Can automatic DMs get my Instagram account banned?
The risk comes from tools that log in with your password or drive the Instagram app like a robot, which Instagram’s terms forbid. A tool on Instagram’s official API does what Meta built that API for, a private reply to a comment, within limits Meta publishes. PigeonDM uses the official API with the permissions you approve on Instagram’s own screen, never sees your password, writes only to people who commented your word, and sends at most 500 DMs an hour per account, a pace it sets itself to stay under Meta’s limits.
- What does PigeonDM keep, and can I delete it?
The log keeps each comment and what PigeonDM did with it for 60 days, then deletes it. Deleting your account from the settings erases it and its data at once. Removing the app from Instagram schedules the same erasure after 30 days, and reconnecting within that time cancels it. The privacy policy lists what is kept and for how long.
Privacy policy- Is PigeonDM made by Meta or Instagram?
No. PigeonDM is an independent product, not affiliated with or endorsed by Meta or Instagram. It connects through the API that Meta opens to outside apps, like the other comment-to-DM tools.
Plans
- Is PigeonDM free?
Yes. The free plan has no time limit and no cap on DMs, and runs 3 posts at a time with 1 trigger word on each and a short PigeonDM mention in the DM. Pro costs $15 a month or $150 a year, and adds every post at once, up to 10 trigger words per post, stats and click tracking, DM and story auto-replies, automatic retries, the CSV export and no mention.
- Can I use PigeonDM on several Instagram accounts?
Yes. Each account connects on its own and starts on the free plan. A Pro subscription covers one Instagram account, so two accounts on Pro means two subscriptions.

- Is PigeonDM a good alternative to ManyChat?

PigeonDM charges $15 a month however many people it answers, and its free plan has no DM cap on 3 posts at a time. ManyChat is the better choice if you need other channels, conversation flows or broadcasts, which PigeonDM does not do.
